ShowSize 5.1 is now available
We're glad to announce version 5.1 of ShowSize with the following new features. The paid users can get the new version from the self-service web site support.showsize.com.
I'm only showing the major new features or highlights here.
The latest exact version is 5.1.6. The exact version specific "Improvements and/or Known problems" are documented at the end of this page. You can also get to them directly by the "What's New" button at the bottom ShowSize window.
ShowSize 5.1 is compatible with Windows 7
ShowSize 5.1 has passed Microsoft designed tests to minimize the possibility of crashes, hangs, and reboots and ensures compatibility with Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
Speed improvements:
We have improved the speed of certain operations and have made some fixes in the interface. The Report Viewer in 5-user version has also got many improvements.
Two new columns in the Owners report (available only in 5-user edition or better):
By default, you won't see the new columns but you will need to switch them on by the Columns pull down as shown below.

Created column showing Date/Time of Creation: You can switch on the new "Created" column by the Columns pull down. In case you don't know, the Modified column in all the reports can be made to show the later of created or modified date. This advanced option is available on the options screen. You can check and switch it on or off depending on your requirement.
Owner column: You can switch on the new "Owner" column by the Columns pull down. Why did we add this column? Although this report is grouped by owners, when seeing and scrolling a large file list by owners, it was not quickly possible to see the owner of the current file list being viewed. For this reason, the Owner column has been added so that when scrolling a large list, you will constantly be able to view the owner of the files. Please see the following picture for an example.

The above picture shows the new columns. In case you are wondering, the file names are in red color in the above report because all of them are from a System folder, and ShowSize shows System and Hidden items in red color (you can customize the color in Options too).
Two new columns in the Only Files report:
The same new columns are also available in the Only Files report. What is the advantage? Please see the "Why it may be useful?" and the picture below.
Created column showing Date/Time of Creation: You can now switch on the "Created" column by the Columns pull down. In case you don't know, the Modified column in all the reports can be made to show the later of created or modified date. This advanced option is available on the options screen. You can check and switch it on or off depending on your requirement.
Owner column (available only in 5-user edition or better): You can now switch on the "Owner" column by the Columns pull down. Why did we add this column? It might be useful in many instances.
Why it may be useful? Suppose you reverse sorted the files list on size as shown below so that the largest files are at the top. You would like to know which user created these files. The owner column helps in quickly determining that.
New CSV export option to export folder hierarchy:
You will see a new menu "Export the Folder Names Tree" on the Tools--Export menu. This option exports just the foler names to the CSV file based on the hierarchy and levels so that when you import this CSV file in your Excel spreadsheet, you will see the top level folder names in Column A, next level folder names in Column B and so on. This was done on an advanced user request and I suppose, it can be useful for others too. If you have any more ideas for such useful features, please do let us know.
The following picture shows such a CSV file opened in Excel.
Print Preview restored:
The print preview option had been disabled in the last release due to some problems. It has been restored again.
Old options restored:
Two options were disabled in the earlier version due to some problem. They have been restored and fixed. These are:
Do not make alternate rows gray in the reports: This option is on the General page of Options. When you print Wysiwug reports, you may want to disable gray rows to save on ink. This option allows that.
Start another ShowSize when the drive changes: This option is on the Advanced page of Options. It starts another copy of ShowSize if you happen to scan a folder on a different drive in ShowSize. This might be helpful in some cases where the previous location's results have to be preserved while scanning the new location.
Convenient What's New button:
You will see a new buttton "What's New" at the bottom right and on the help menu. This will now go to a web site to show you the latest features and known problems or issues in your version of ShowSize.
